Having had a quick look at the menu online my husband and I were really looking forward to reviewing Miller and Carter Steakhouse in Wilmslow, having been lucky enough in the past to eat in some amazing steakhouses in Argentina, we struggle to find places in the UK that compare. We were booked in for 8pm on a Wednesday and were surprised to see it was relatively busy (not a surprise after the food we ate there!)

The restaurant is set within a very smart looking building with plenty of parking in the middle of Wilmslow and only a short walk from the station. Inside the décor is equally smart, with a large sweeping staircase leading to the upstairs dining areas and log fires. The way the restaurant is laid out allows an intimate dining experience with areas tucked away, with attentive staff we were not forgotten about.

We were served by Andre an excellent, knowledgeable waiter, you would have thought that having looked at the menu previously online that making a food choice would be easy, apparently not – it’s always a good sign when it takes nearly as long to chose your food as it does to eat it as it all sounded so good.  I had just decided on ordering the BBQ ribs when Andre told us of the specials and I quickly changed my mind to a Beef and Malbec Pie.

For starters I had the dusted crispy calamari and my husband had the duck rillettes. I was very impressed with the calamari, it’s one of my favourite things to eat and is often overcooked in restaurants, it was thankfully perfectly tender in a lovely light batter and garlic mayonnaise. The duck rillettes were served with a good amount of ciabatta and beautiful caramelised onion chutney a perfect quantity for a starter and really flavoursome.

For the main course I had a beef and Malbec pie which was served with vegetables, a choice of potatoes (I chose fries) and an unusual but wonderful slice of onion loaf. The pie was truly wonderful, the meat was tender with a rich Malbec flavour and all the accompaniments were in just the right proportion.

My husband choose the 12oz sirloin steak cooked medium-rare as recommended, with a peppercorn sauce, seasoned fries and a lettuce wedge with a bacon and honey sauce. The steak was perfectly cooked, well rested, tender and succulent he just wishes more restaurants would cook steak this way.

In addition to our mains we also added a couple of side dishes in accompaniment, these included a half rack of barbeque ribs and a grilled half lobster tail. As with all the food we were served these were generously proportioned and tasted beautiful. I was happy that I got to sample the ribs as well as the pie I chose.

The only disappointment in our meal was that the starters, mains and sides were so delicious we didn’t have any space left for dessert, which was a shame as they looked fabulous. We did overhear several other diners talking very complimentary about their desserts so I am sure they were as equally wonderful as the rest of the food.

For drinks we both had a glass of the house wine which complimented the meal well. Whilst we were eating there were two other groups eating nearby to us, both had obviously brought visitors to their ‘favourite’ restaurant and we could hear them waxing lyrical about how wonderful it was and why they always come back  – I don’t think a restaurant needs a better compliment than that.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Miller and Carter Wilmslow, it was our first time out together since we had our baby 8 months ago, testament to the good food and atmosphere that we really relaxed and enjoyed ourselves instead of worrying! We would (and have done since visiting) highly recommend this to all friends who enjoy good steak and I am sure we will be back again soon – saving room for some desserts!
