Missing in Shanghai is the third book in the Diplomatic Crime Series written by former British diplomat Jean Harrod.

Jess Turner is back for a third time in this fantastic thrilling series. After assignments in Australia and the Turks and Caicos Islands, she has returned to London and has been on the China desk in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for 6 months. She is preparing for the state visit of the Chinese Premier. Her job is to make sure that it all runs smoothly and without a hitch.

As the visit is getting closer, tensions and high and about to get worse as Jess uncovers a 34-year-old mystery involving the apparent suicide of a British Ambassador and a missing diplomat, Marianne Henderson. Her boss and the FCO has just also apparently committed suicide. With no evidence of the events that took place in Shanghai 1984, when Jess starts asking questions she is warned off but soon gets caught up in events that she has now control over and lead her into to grave danger.

Australian police detective, and a friend of Jess, DI Tom Sangster is also in London attached to the Metropolitan Police armed diplomatic protection squad and meets up with Jess. He is soon involved in the case and is just like old times. He is soon warned off looking into the missing diplomat.

With a cover up at the highest levels Jess and Tom and soon in lots of danger, but can they find out what really happened in Shanghai, why it was covered up and who was responsible?

Overall, Missing in Shanghai is another great instalment in the Diplomatic Crime Series and yet again is fast-paced, well-written, exciting and thrilling. As a former British Diplomat (who has worked in Shanghai), it shows in the writing in an authoritative, knowledgeable and believable way.

Jess and Tom are great characters. The story flows very well and is extremely hard to put down. It is set in present day London and 1984 Shanghai and switches back and forth between the 2 eras with ease.

Missing in Shanghai is a captivating thriller of entrapment, betrayal, espionage and murder.
