Arriving at the Royal Concert Hall, we felt rather out of place, it was as if we had joined the universities in Nottingham’s field trip. We approached the box office to collect our tickets and the rather bemused young man asked if we were in the right place as Sherlock Holmes was playing next door. We assured him that, in spite of the fact that we could remember the moon landings, we were indeed in the right place, and were looking forward to a night with Jamie Morton and his friends from Leeds University, James Cooper and Alice Levine of Radio 1 fame.

We made our way to the auditorium and settled down, watching the rest of the audience find their seats, there was an excited buzz of anticipation. We saw our twenty something year old son, out with friends and waved enthusiastically, in the hope that the embarrassment would floor him, he waved back with a cheery grin, as it to assure us we were in for a great night’s entertainment.

So, why was a near capacity audience awaiting three very ordinary leather chairs with beach legs to be filled? If you’re a fan of Belinda Blinked 1: by Rocky Flintstone, then you’ll understand that the last sentence was my stab at intertextuality, and my spelling mistakes are a nod to Rocky’s genius.

So, in a nutshell, look, I’ve done it again, pathetic fallacy and double entendre, I’m on a roll.

My Dad Wrote a Porno – is the very real stab, by Jamie Morton’s dad, a retired Irish builder, at becoming a published author. He wrote “A modern story of sex, erotica and passion” and with pride, presented the manuscript to his son for his enjoyment. What Jamie and his cohort did was to make a weekly podcast, pointing out all the inconsistencies, inaccuracies and unnecessary descriptive detail that the author places to titillate his readership “two elegant wooden coat racks” this is erotica at its best.

So, Jamie read the missing chapter, with James and Alice interrupting and interjecting their thoughts – to prove a point, there was audience participation to demonstrate the physical impossibility of some of the scenarios that Rocky had fantasised. Alice even gave an anatomy lesson to demonstrate the fact that, under normal circumstances, the cervix could not be observed.

It was fun and it was funny, however it felt as if some of the spontaneity of the original readings had been lost, and it felt scripted at times.

The sound let the show down a little, as occasionally, we missed the end of sentences, I wondered if this was due to my advancing years, but my very chatty son, who I feel sure had played along with the drinking game, assured me it was not.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening out and I for one, can’t wait to encounter more of Belinda Blumenthal and her pots and pans.
