Nativity! The Musical is the perfect way to kick off the festive season. Running at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh until Sunday 2nd December, it is the must see show to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Written and Directed by Debbie Isitt, Nativity was inspired by her own experiences of the school nativity. Nativity started out as a film before being adapted for the stage with choreography by Andrew Wright and the colourful set and costumes designed by David Woodhead.

As actors turned teacher Mr Maddens (Scott Garnham) and Mr Shakespeare (Andy Brady) use their acting skills at their respective schools to produce the school Nativity play. This brings out the competitive side of Mr Maddens and Mr Shakespeare as they try and obtain five stars from the local Critic (Jo Brand). Mr Poppy (Simon Lipkin) was hilarious, his timing and delivery was spot on!

It is a really feel-good show where the underdog defies the odds and the ethos of believing in yourself comes through as the kids at St Bernadette’s triumph in their play.

The script is very clever with wide ranging humour that will appeal to all ages – it is truly a family show.

As well as the large number of children in the cast, there are also a number of local children that join them at each venue – they were all exceptional!

Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre is situated on Nicolson Street. It is a short walk from Waverly Station and is well serviced with public transport. The theatre is entered through a bright and airy foyer with café and bars. The Festival Café, on the ground floor, serves food and drink prior to performances.

We were seated in the dress circle where the visibility was excellent.  An added bonus was we could also see the orchestra.

Rating: 5/5
