Jason Donovan & His Amazing Midlife Crisis at the Wycombe Swan Review

Last night (24 September 2018) I spent an evening with my first love… along with the rest of the audience in the auditorium of the Wycombe Swan. Jason Donovan (aforementioned first love) and His Amazing Midlife Crisis Tour arrived for one night at the Swan yesterday and what a night it was.

The stage was set with strings of lightbulbs, clothes rails, stools, two armchairs and other homely touches and the show opens to a video montage giving an overview of his life from childhood to Neighbours star to pop star to downward spiral. Then the uphill climb back to popularity and family.

Jason was funny, charismatic and very open about all aspects of his life including fan encounters and Kylie. A particular highlight of the show for me was looking at iconic fashion he’s worn through the years – the double denim, the orange mac and the all important (stolen – who knew!) technicoloured dreamcoat featured amongst others. Jason was joined on stage by Andy, the host who helped keep him on track and posed questions for him to discuss.

It was interesting to hear an insight into Jason’s life, both professional and private and made for a great evening. It would not have been right if he hadn’t taken to the mic at all and thankfully the audience was treated to ‘Any dream will do’ and ‘Too many broken hearts’. Despite commenting a few times at how reserved High Wycombe seemed to be thankfully everyone was up out of their seats for a dance to ‘Too many broken hearts’ by the end of the night!

If you can catch this show in one of the next towns or cities it’s heading too and you were of the Kylie & Jason era it’s a great night out. As always Wycombe Swan itself was fantastic, plenty of parking adjacent to the theatre, well stocked bar and snacks to buy before you’re seated and exceptionally friendly and helpful staff.

A wonderful way to spend an evening with Jason Donovan!
