New Pet Owner? Here Are Your Options For Pet Care When You Go Away

Pets very quickly become like another member of the family. We take care of them in the same way we take care of the kids. And soon, we can’t imagine spending a single day without them. If you’ve recently become a pet owner for the first time, you might still be getting to know one another. You’ll soon find out just how happy they are to see you when you come back home from work. And you’ll enjoy all the extra love and attention they’ll give you when you get to stay home at the weekend. So what on earth are you going to do when you take a summer holiday next year?

Finding pet care isn’t always easy. Don’t panic, though, because there are always options to choose from. One of the most obvious solutions is to select a good kennel or cattery. This will add to the cost of your holiday, but you’ll know your pet is safe. Some boarding kennels offer video monitoring so you can see what your beloved pet is getting up to.

There are, of course, requirements from the kennels before you book your pooch or kitty in. Vaccinations must be up to date to ensure the health of all the residents. Many boarding providers request that you leave all the food that your pet will need to consume in your absence. And some kennels are unable to take care of animals that require regular medication.

If kennels aren’t right for you, then why not check out some dog-friendly holiday homes? Taking your pet with you on holiday can feel like the most natural way to enjoy a family holiday after all. You can often find private holiday lets that will allow you take your pet with you. Some may have rules about the number of dogs you’re allowed to take with you, though! But what can you do if your pet isn’t a dog?

Neighbours and friends are usually happy to pop into your home once or twice a day to feed your pets. Detailed instructions can help a lot here. However, some people won’t be up for cleaning up litter trays, dropping sheets, or dog messes. It might be worth splitting the responsibilities between a couple of different people. This can cover any unexpected difficulties. Always leave the number of your vet as well as your own phone number for emergencies.

Another option is to hire a professional cat, dog or pet sitter. For those pets that tend to fret when left alone for long periods, this could be the best choice. You will be expected to pay a minimum hourly rate. Sometimes your pet will move in with the sitter. Some sitters will move into your home while you’re away. You might have a preference here, so make sure you are clear on your requirements.

It can be really hard leaving your pet behind. Taking him or her with you will always be the best option, but not necessarily the most practical! How do you care for your pet when you travel?
