No Meat No Dairy No Gluten Review

Reviewed by Penny Munro

Having had a husband recently diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, I was more than happy to review this book as I was frequently finding it difficult to fit the gluten free diet into everyday family meals. That was until this great little book came along.

At first glance, I was disappointed not to find any photographs but the couple of recipes that I have tried came out tasting utterly delicious – who cares what they look like when they taste so good. Whilst all of the recipes are vegetarian, dairy and gluten free, there are suggestions throughout if, like me, a main course needs meat!  For dessert, the Coconut and Mango Fool was scrumptious, I am going to use it for my next dinner party, it will be a lot more healthy than my standard chocolate mousse! All the recipes exclude processed ingredients so cooking will be a lot more healthy anyway.

There is a fabulous little section called “Odds and Ends” filled with recipes for sauces, chutneys, pates and relishes. These are things that I do not normally venture to prepare myself but the author makes it sound so easy, I will definitely give them a go next year. I am particularly keen to try the Pear and Apple Chutney – both fruits I grow in my own garden.

I have to admit that I was sceptical that the recipes would be using obscure ingredients but the author nips this in the bud in the first page of the first chapter when she explains about one particular ingredient that I had never heard about before being widely available in most supermarkets. She was absolutely right when I discovered it in my medium sized Tesco. All the rest of the ingredients mentioned are commonplace.

All in all, I consider this book to be a must have for anyone who needs to cook for a coeliac, a vegetarian or someone with a lactose intolerance but would recommend it to anyone who wants to cut down on the processed ingredients and concentrate instead on more natural flavours.
