I have always loved going to the ballet and had never seen Wuthering Heights so was very excited about going to see this. The Northern Ballet Company are described as Europe’s best dance company and are the winners of the Best Company at the Taglioni European Ballet Awards.

We went to the Milton Keynes Theatre in Milton Keynes. There was ample pay and display parking nearby, and after 6pm parking where we were (next to John Lewis) was free. The theatre was clean, welcoming and had a wonderful ambience. We were met at the door and warmly welcomed by the staff. All the staff that we interacted with were very helpful and polite. The toilets were lovely and clean and easy to find.

Wuthering Heights was written by Emily Brontë and is a story about passion and obsession. “Cathy and Heathcliff’s love is as unruly and dangerous as the Yorkshire moors that surround them. As children they are inseparable, running wild and free on the moors, but over time their childish affection deepens into an overwhelming love – a devastating force that even death cannot destroy.” It has an original score by celebrated composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, known for his West End and Broadway hits Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, with the Choreography, Direction and Costume Design by David Nixon OBE.

The atmosphere in the auditorium was one of anticipation and excitement, and as the lights went down and the music started a silence descended in the auditorium. The scenery was stunning and created the wildness of the Yorkshire Moors. Set changes were seamless and didn’t impose on the performance in any way.

From the outset the dancing was exceptional and breath-taking. The perfection of the dancing and the passion with which the dancers performed captivated the audience and held our attention. The young Cathy (Rachael Gillespie) and Heathcliff (Jeremy Curnier) perfectly portrayed the innocence and trusting love of youth. The transition to adults was seamless and beautifully done. Heathcliff, portrayed by Tobias Batley, was captivating from the outset. His performance was flawless, and he showed such passion when dancing, and showed us the dangerous side to Heathcliff. His duets with Cathy (Martha Leebolt) and Isabella (Hannah Bateman) were stunning and the choreography clearly showed the differences in the relationships.

A truly mesmerising, enchanting, and at times haunting portrayal of a wonderful story.

A beautiful ballet and a must see for Brontë and ballet fans alike!
