The Princess and the Pea is the famous fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen about a young woman whose royal identity is established by a test of her physical sensitivity. Director Emily Summers and the Lichfield Garrick Community present their glitzy and glamorous musical with a 1920’s twist and chances are, you’ll never look at fairytales quite the same way again!
Twelve princesses have tried to win the hand of Prince Dauntless (Adam Robinson) but have failed to prove their claim to royalty due to the Queen’s (Julie Roches) rigorous and near impossible tests. Princess No 13, Princess Winnifred (Rebecca Mills), has her work cut out to prove her worthiness!
Set and stage designer, Carl Davies, has transformed each scene so the audience can truly feel the glitz and glamour portrayed by the cast.
Backed by a wonderful musical score and a very talented cast, the vocalist I was most impressed by was Rebecca Mills, playing Princess Winnifred, who captured the heart of not only Prince Dauntless, but the audience too. Another vocalist worthy of mention is Lauren Sutherland, Lady Larken, who has very valid reasons for the Prince to be married in less than nine months! Equally as impressive, Alexander Nichols and Alfie Kentesber who played the Minstrel and the Jester, who had us in stitches throughout the show. A very special mention to all the children acting in the show, some incredibly talented youngsters are part of this cast.
The Lichfield Garrick is a modern purposed built theatre first opened in 2003. It plays host to the best and widest range of musical theatre, drama, comedy, music and family entertainment in the City of Lichfield. In 2013 the Lichfield Garrick moved to charitable trust status. The theatre has recently won the UK Theatre Award for the West Midlands Most Welcoming Theatre (2017) and The What’s On Award for Staffordshire’s Best Arts Venue/Theatre (2017 & 2018).
The romantic, raucous and rollicking Once Upon A Mattress is a musical fairytale not to be missed!
The show was preceded by ‘The Shadow’, and adaptation by director Emily Summers of another Hans Christian Anderson tale and performed by The Upstagers. The Upstagers are an integrated Theatre company who include adults of all skills and abilities and meet at the Lichfield Garrick.
