I am always looking for new games to play with my family to try and tear them away from their beloved iPads and computer games and this game sound great!
I had not heard of this game and knew nothing about it but the name itself really intrigued me and it was aimed at ages 8 upwards so thought ideal for us to play with my eldest daughter who is 11 years.
The game arrived and everything you need comes in a little box, inside are the cards (the game players) and instructions and that is it. At first I had no idea where to start but after reading the clear instructions I decided as advised to download the free app for our phone. It is free for Android and iOS devices. The app is the Announcer of the game and keeps the game flowing rather than having someone be the Announcer.
The game can be played with 3 players or more, there were three of us, myself, my partner and my 11 year old daughter. So after perusing the instructions and downloading the app we were ready to go.
Basically each player takes on the role of either a Villager, a Werewolf or a special character all decided by choosing a card and you have a quick glance to know who you are. There are good roles – Villagers, Seers, etc… or ‘Bad Guys’ – werewolf’s or minion’s…. You could be a werewolf, or a troublemaker or even a helpful Seer, each character has a special ability. The idea of the game is to find out who the werewolf is and to kill it to win the game.
Everyone shuts their eyes and the Announcer (from the app) takes everyone through the game announcing certain characters/roles to perform certain secret night time things which could be swapping two cards, looking at another players card or finding out who your fellow werewolf might be… then everyone is told to ‘wake up’ and together they must vote and seek out to kill at least one werewolf. If by vote they kill a werewolf the village win, if not the werewolves win. Each game however will be different and this is the beauty of this fast paced game, no two games will ever be the same.
It’s a fast paced game and to help us get to grips with it we paused the Announcer a few times just so that we all were doing things correctly. After a few minutes we all were told by the announcer to VOTE and point to who each other thinks is the werewolf. The player with the most votes dies…………..
I can totally understand the beauty of this game and see why it can become quite addictive due to a game perhaps lasting only 10 minutes or so, so in one night we could play several games, each one with a different outcome.
It does take a bit to get to grips with all the parts of the game and what you are to do, but the app announcer really helped us with this.
Even my youngest daughter who is 7 years played the next game and loved it, although she wasn’t so good at bluffing – which helps in this game as you really don’t want to give away who you are!
I can see why this game has won game awards in 2014. It’s so totally different to anything we have ever played before and its quick, very little set up time, fast paced and quite addictive. I need to be more persuasive and bluff more though!
This is a definite buy for any game enthusiasts, and would be suitable for ages 7 years up in my opinion. It was described by my 11 year old as ‘awesome’ and due to the nature of its wee box size can be taken anywhere so ideal when we go on holidays.
We would like to give this fantastic game 5*.
