I was delighted to be asked to review Oppo “Guilt-Free” ice cream. My first obstacle was finding a local stockist. My local Co-op didn’t have it but they very kindly rang another branch who did. I understand that Waitrose and Holland and Barrett are also stockists (the Oppo website does have a store finder option where you enter your post code to find your nearest store). I chose two of their flavours to try this time, the Mint Chocolate Swirl and the Salted Caramel. They come in 500ml cardboard tubs, which in my area are completely recyclable. A definite plus for me.
As a lifetime fan of all ice cream I couldn’t wait to dig in. I was not disappointed. The Salted Caramel was creamy and smooth with a lovely flavour and no after taste. Definitely my favourite and usually a no no with anyone watching their sugar intake. At less than 40 calories a scoop and only 6.2 grams of sugars per 100ml it can safely be added to my weekday meals instead of keeping for high days and holidays. The caramel flavour normally associated with sugar is achieved using a natural fruit flavour.
My husband preferred the Mint Chocolate Swirl. It was much easier to scoop out of the tub, in fact it felt more of a soft scoop ice cream than the Salted Caramel, but I found the texture a little on the crunchy side. He loved it and said that the Mint Chocolate flavour was a real hit. Again, although a little higher on the sugar level and therefore the calorific value a still very acceptable treat.
They are made with coconut oil, stevia leaf, fresh milk and natural flavourings so are also suitable, I believe, for vegetarians.
Price wise I found them to be on a par with many of the premium brands, certainly not an obstacle to buying again. In fact, I have already put them on my shopping list, one flavour for me and one for him. A definite plus in a marriage. I will also be looking out for their Vanilla flavour.
