I received the OXO Good Grips Ice Cream Scoop – Beak to review. It came packaged on a piece of cardboard, black and white with only the OXO title in red. On the back there are three pictures explaining the main features of the scoop which were:
– glides into hard ice cream
– large capacity beak shape
– easy release
There weren’t any instructions as such but it did say in addition to the above that it had a flat back accommodating square and round containers, large capacity beak shape which rolls perfect scoops and contoured, non-slip grip which absorbs pressure. It had all the information in French, Spanish and German as well.
The scoop itself was a stylish stainless steel scoop in an oval shape with a black velvet feel handle which was good to grip and not at all slippy. It was heavier than I thought it would be but that have it a high quality feel rather than being clunky.
In order to truly test the scoop, I had to use several different ice creams (what a shame… not). I love ice cream so perfect excuse for me to have lots! The scoop glided through soft scoop ice cream like a knife through butter. It was effortless. There were no issues with the edges of the square tub and you can go right across from edge to edge.
I felt the scoop worked best for rolling into balls with harder ice cream. It was still effortless using the scoop but the balls formed much better. The balls were more egg shaped than the traditional round balls which for cones as they actually sit better on top because the slimmer side falls into the top of the cone. Less chance of rolling off!
There was an easy release button but to be honest the ice cream came off the scoop easy enough and I didn’t need to use it. A good feature though just in case.
The scoop was easy to clean and didn’t have and nooks or crannies to get into because of its sleek egg shaped design. There is a hole on the handle which I use to hang it with my utensils on show in my kitchen.
This is a good quality item which you can get for £12 and I think this is a fair price for the scoop of this quality.
