We had a fantastic visit to Edinburgh Zoo yesterday. We were very excited about visiting the pandas. Beforehand we went to the Panda Storytelling Session and heard The Story of Chi Chi and the Missing Bamboo. This was the story of Chi Chi’s quest to find bamboo due to the bamboo forests of China being cut down to make way for houses.
Jess told the kids the story with the help of a number of puppets which was very visual, perfect for the age group and kept their attention. There were many facts dropped into the story although the message of conservation was slightly lost on this age group. At 15 minutes it was the perfect length of time and the atmosphere and delivery was appealing and friendly.
After hearing the story the children have a chance to meet the puppets and the rangers were really good with the kids. There were a number of other exhibits in the room which the kids were fascinated by.
The session was held in the cosy Rainforest Room in the Education Centre. It was limited to a small number which was perfect for the space. It was quite informal so definitely more relaxing for parents! There was seating for the adults and rugs and cushions for the kids to sit on.
This is a drop-in session running at weekends from 11.45- 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays from now until 28th February 2015. The session is for age five and under but I would say slightly older children would enjoy it and possibly understand the message a bit more. Definitely plan to get there early as the places fill up quickly!
