The Lowry theatre is a superb venue, offering a choice of comfortable bars and seating areas. The show we saw was held in the Quays Theatre, which is the smaller, more intimate theatre, ideal for a comedy performance.
‘Image Conscious’ is a comedy show lasting around 2 hours with a 20 minute interval.
On the night we went, the show was reasonably well attended by a receptive Lowry audience. The audience was mixed in terms of ages but were all adults. The material used by both performers contained nothing offensive and no bad language featured, but some of the content was more suited to adults.
The supporting act for the evening was Malcolm Head. As a warm up act Malcolm’s comedy included poems, an interesting take on football chants and age bingo, which was particularly funny and encouraged some audience interaction. Malcolm’s routine was not standard comedy, but it was well thought out, very well delivered and set the alternative tone of the evening.
When Paul came onto the stage, we were not sure what to expect. His mullet hairstyle and unique dress sense gave an indication that this was going to be a different night to other comedy acts we have seen, and indeed it was.
Paul’s style of reflection and storytelling takes comedy to a different level, and we found his story about arranging a suburban orgy and linking this with 80’s snooker legends one of the highlights of the evening. Who would have thought that the subject of imperial weights and measures could be so entertaining?
It is possible that Paul’s style of comedy may not be for everyone, we were divided in our opinion of the style of humour and how funny we found some of his reflections. We both agreed that the material was superbly brought together and excellently delivered. Fans of Paul were treated to a great night of comedy.
There were no encores from Paul, the show ended promptly, but Paul made himself available in the foyer to meet and greet his fans and to pose for photographs.
This show offered good value and was entertaining.
