MD, ALAN DAY VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP
Paul Tanner, 43, is the Managing Director of the Alan Day Volkswagen dealership in London. He started working at Alan Day in 1987, aged 19, as a parts driver. At this stage he was hoping to excel at athletics where he had represented Great Britain at the European club championships.
Unfortunately in 1988 he suffered an injury ending his career. This meant Paul needed to use the focus and determination that he had gained from his years of training and use this to drive his new career at Alan Day.
After a year in the driving role, Paul was moved into the parts department and in his first year became the top selling parts man. However, he decided there was more opportunity in the service department. He trained and became a vehicle electrician where he spent two years gaining valuable knowledge in the service department before being asked to go back into the parts department as a supervisor.
Paul was then asked by Bobby (Mr. Alan Day) if he would take on the role of service manager. The site went from strength to strength winning numerous awards for customer satisfaction and being awarded the Dealer of Excellence award six years running.
Volkswagen were so pleased with the way Alan Day and Paul delivered outstanding levels of service they were awarded the new London flagship site at New Southgate in 1998 and sales and service departments were placed together on the same site for the first time.
In 2000 Paul was asked to take over the whole site and became general manager. The site was awarded the prestige award of Car Dealership of the Year for all brands by the leading motor trade press.
Volkswagen then asked Alan Day to take on 3 further sites, 2 in 2002 and a third in 2003,
Paul was then asked to be Director of Volkswagen for the Alan Day group and help the company to further success.
In 2006 Paul decided he needed a group accountant to help drive the business forward. He employed Brian Searle who had 20 years experience working for large motor retailing groups.
Paul and Brian worked well together and Brian is now a shareholder.
In 2006 Paul and Brian formed Tanner Automotive and with Volkswagen’s support purchased the 4 sites from Alan Day. Bobby is still a very close friend of Paul’s and allowed him and Brian to continue using the Alan Day name which Paul had worked so hard to grow.
After a very successful start to their ownership Paul and Brian were very pleased to win Volkswagen dealer of excellence in 2009, in 2010 Alan Day were asked to take on a further 2 sites, one for Volkswagen Commercial vehicles the largest sales site in London and a new site in south London, the building works will commence shortly with an expected completion of July 2012.
Paul believes he has some of the most hard working knowledgeable individuals working with him in the motor industry today and recognises that he has worked with some gifted people who have helped make Alan Day the company it is today.
