If you are a parent of preschool aged children you know all of the characters from Peppa Pig. I think every child goes through a phase of staring at the TV totally engrossed by the pink jumping blobs on the screen.  I had wondered how they could turn a 5 minute TV program into an hour long stage show that would keep small ones amused. However after seeing the show I can confirm that they managed it, and even managed to entertain the adults as well.

I took my 2 children to see Peppa Pig’s Big Splash at the Sheffield Lyceum, on a Wednesday afternoon. My 3 year old had been to a couple of other theatre performances, but for my nearly one year old it was his first visit to anything like this. I was concerned that he would not like it, but it wasn’t long before he was trying to dance during the songs.

The Lyceum is in the centre of Sheffield, we travelled by train and walked the 10 minutes from the train station easily. When walked through the doors, we were greeted by a staff member who explained that there was a staffed buggy park arranged in a room at the other end of the theatre. This was a brilliant idea as I had wondered what I would do with the pushchair. My only gripe with this is that it really could have done with some signage or a staff member directing people with pushchairs outside. Once inside it was quite difficult to navigate my way through the queues trying to buy the very tempting merchandise.  The staff were very helpful and explained they would help me get the pushchair down the steps to outside at the end of the performance, which was great as I was on my own with both children. In fact all the staff we encountered were helpful, the usher who showed us to our seat even offered to help me carry a bag.

Our seats were in the balcony, quite high up, but a fabulous view. My 3 year old was very excited to be that high up. In front of all the seats on the balcony there is a safety fence / bar, which didn’t really restrict the view, but did make for a good climbing frame for a 3 year old!

The show consists of some of the well-known stories and songs from Peppa Pig episodes stitched together into an hour long show (2 x 30 minutes plus interval). The show is brought to life using puppets, with a new human character called Daisy leading the fun. There is lots of audience participation with songs, dancing, clapping, jumping and even pretending to throw a ball. The cast of puppeteers are all extremely talented, they all have a puppet and sing and dance throughout the show. All the characters are well known, Suzy Sheep, Pedro Pony, Danny Dog, Mr Potato, Mr Bull, George, Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig, and of course Peppa.

The smiles that both of my children gave throughout the performance just showed that they loved it. If you have children who love Peppa, it is a must see!
