Piranha was first released in 1978 and had a remake in 1995 and now is released on Blu-ray for the first time.

Piranha is a horror-comedy based on the very successful Jaws movie. There are no killer sharks in this film just small fish with razor sharp teeth that strip the flesh from your bones.

When two teenagers enter a closed military site to go swimming and are never seen again private detective Maggie McKeown (Heather Menzies) is given the task of trying to find them so goes to Lost RiverLake. She teams up with local drunk Paul Grogan (Bradford Dillman) to guide her.

They stumble upon a supposedly abandoned fish hatchery that became a military compound and accidentally drains the outside pools releasing hundreds or deadly genetically altered mutant piranha.

Now that are in a race against time to stop these deadly fish from getting down the river to where a school holiday camp and new resort are located where hundreds of innocent people have now become fish bait, including Paul’s young daughter.

Overall, Piranha is a parody of Jaws it is quite entertaining if you take it for what it is – a comedy horror. While having lots of gore it also has lots of tongue-in-cheek humourand is an enjoyable watch.

A cult classic and one for your movie collection.
