I was sent the first episode of the very funny British sitcom Plebs to review in time for its DVD and Blu-ray release on 29 April. I had heard of the program but had never seen it so wasn’t too sure what to expect, but I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Plebs is set in Ancient Rome and follows the lives of 3 men who have moved from the suburbs to Rome.
Marcus, his friend Stylax (AKA Shredder) and their lazy slave, Grumio, have been invited to an orgy but must bring a girl and their own towel, all they have between them are their own towels so they have to try and find a willing partner.
Marcus asks a new resident from Britain, Cynthia, to a “party” but her slave Metella finds out from Grumino, who is forging for dinner at the bins, the real reason. Stylax sends out on office memo asking for girls to apply and ends up being invited by his boss and ends up being part of the show in a cage while poor stupid Grumino ends up being dressed as a girl as a date for Marcus,
Overall, I found this first episode to be very enjoyable and funny with scenes like Stylax trying to pull off a Sharon Stone moment from Basic Instinct with his boss. Although it is set in Ancient Rome all the language is updated to the modern standards of today’s youth and works quite well.
I will not be looking to watch the rest of the series. If you like sitcoms like The Inbetweeners you should enjoy Plebs.
Plebs is available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray from Amazon here.
