The first thing to catch my eye when I took my seat in the Edinburgh Playhouse was a gigantic lipstick adorning the stage. I had a feeling I was in for a treat!

Based on the popular film, the story is about Tick, a Drag Queen who gets a call from his wife to come to Alice Springs to meet his son. So he sets off on a long journey across Australia along with his drag club friends, Bernadette and Adam aboard their clapped out old bus, Priscilla.

There are disco classics galore, all performed wonderfully, and the audience were clapping, singing and dancing along throughout. There’s lots of humour and some real laugh out loud moments. Some of it’s a little risqué and there’s the odd swear word but it’s all in context and the audience didn’t seem to mind one bit.

There are some touching moments too, when the trio encounter some prejudice along the way and how their friendship gets them through it. When Tick finally meets his son and finds himself accepted for who he is was lovely and his duet with his son on the Lego bed was just delightful.

Jason Donovan is brilliant in his role as Tick. His vocals are spot on and he embraces the role and gives it his all. It’s another ex Neighbours star who steals the show however; Richard Grieve is magnificent in his portrayal of Bernadette.

Special mention has to go to the costume designers. The variety of outfits, shoes and wigs is truly mind-boggling with everything from paintbrushes to cupcakes. How the cast could walk, never mind dance, in those enormous platform shoes I will never know!

This is a fabulous show not to be missed, a feast for the senses that will have you grinning from ear to ear.
