I was excited to be going to see Real Diamond By Request on Friday night (26 January 2018) at the Grove Theatre in Dunstable. I had attended last year with my mother in law, seeing the amazing Real Diamond Rocks Tour and couldn’t wait for the return and the show to start. Not quite a sell out tonight, those that didn’t come to see the show definitely missed out in my opinion.

Last year I came away saying that Real Diamond – John Hylton was by far the best tribute act that I had ever been to see and I still feel the same, accompanied by a four piece band,  his son on vocals and occasionally on guitar, we were once again treated to phenomenal vocal performances of Neil Diamond songs.

John was once again happy to share personal information, giving the show an intimate feel, not trying to pretend that he is Neil Diamond, he shared where he was born, where he grew up and that his wife was in the audience last night, among other facts and he was also out meeting the audience in the interval giving a very personal touch.

With tonight’s show being the By Request tour, John sang songs for various audience members engaging us further.

I’m still a pup according to John (under 50!) so didn’t know all of the songs that were sung last night, but that didn’t stop me from having a fantastic time, the audience were swaying from the start and up on their feet by the end of the show.

Some of my favourites that were included in tonight’s show were ‘Love on the Rocks’, ‘Sweet Caroline’ and ‘We’re Coming to America’, foot tapping, hand clapping songs all the way through until we were actually up on our feet.

As always the staff at the Grove were polite and informative, there is a very large car park in walking distance to the theatre, but there were very few lights working, this is maintained by the council and not the Grove Theatre itself, I did pass on my concerns that it was extremely dark and was told that the message would be passed on. The toilets were clean and tidy and the bar staff did a fantastic job in the interval to see to all in a timely manner.

I would strongly recommend that you go and see a Real Diamond performance, John Hylton is simply amazing. If you don’t catch the tour this year then make sure you look out for next year’s Jazz Singer tour. Definitely not to be missed!
