I was so excited to be attending the New Theatre in Oxford last night (Saturday 4 March 2017) with my friend to see Sam Bailey and her Sing My Heart Out tour. I had followed Sam’s journey on the X-Factor when she was crowned the winner back in 2013, I thought that I knew Sam from watching her journey back then but little did I know.
Tonight’s show was at the New Theatre, I have to give a mention to their customer service, I had called earlier in the day for parking suggestions and spoke to a delightful young lady, who took the time to find and advise me where to park, told where to find the theatre and which bus stop to get off at. We parked at the Water Eaton Park and ride; it was then a short journey into the city.
The theatre is in the city centre and reminded me of being in London, on a narrow street, bars and shops are plentiful on the door step. Inside the auditorium the theatre had an art deco look with very padded seats, nice and comfortable.
Sam was supported by two acts last night; Kirby Frost, a 17 year old young girl who herself I found out had auditioned for the X-Factor last year too, Kirby did some covers really well and then treated us to her own song, that was fantastic. We also had the very unique sound of Nikki Loy. I would like to say it had a folk sound to her voice but it wasn’t that alone, I could easily imagine sitting round a huge camp fire listening to her songs. Her new CD is on sale she proudly told us in HMV! Definitely worth a listen.
Sam Bailey came on stage after as short interlude, opening up with a powerful number and quickly going on to paying tribute to George Michael. Sam told us that we would be on an emotional journey with her, and we were, we had songs that pulled at your heart strings and powerful diva tunes.
Sam tour is called ‘Sing my Heart Out’ which she certainly does but I think I could easily of been called ‘ This is Me’, Sam was honest, engaging and comical without really trying, she reminds me of Adele, she has the cockney voice, says it how it is and then just has this phenomenal voice, I thought that I knew Sam Bailey from the X-Factor but I didn’t really, I met that person on stage last night, a hard working mum of three, that loved to play (and was very good) at football as young girl, a tom boy, who had to learn to walk like a lady!
Sam does not only have a sensational voice but she is a musician too, we saw her playing the guitar and were treated to her playing the drums too (she told us she owns two drum sets and has played since she was 6).
Sam was accompanied on stage by her four piece band and three backing singers, we had another treat but I will leave that for you to find out and enjoy yourself when you go to see the concert.
Sam sung a mixture of covers including the song she had sung with Nicole Scherzinger ‘I Am Telling You’ on the live X-Factor shows and some of her own songs that she had co-written with Ben Adams (former A1 member) including ‘No Tomorrow’ and ‘Echo’ that I thoroughly enjoyed.
It was a smallish crowd in tonight but I felt thoroughly entertained, Sam is a powerhouse of a singer and real lady, supporting a Hospice ‘Rainbows’ with collections at her event, showing her true character.
We finished the evening with an 80’s Medley, involving all on stage, great solo performances there by the backing singers.
I would highly recommend that you go and see Sam on tour, entertaining, engaging and honest with that power house of a voice you would not be disappointed.
