Yesterday, Sunday 8th of October 2017, I visited Parkwood Theatres The Hawth in Crawley to see Sinatra, Sequins and Swing.
The theatre was clean, bright and spacious. There were plenty of facilities and a lift to use for those who needed one. The staff were polite, helpful and happy to assist in any way that they could. The food in the restaurant was nice and reasonably priced. The service was quick and the food was freshly cooked and hot.
Sinatra, Sequins and Swing was looking at the career of Frank Sinatra during his Capitol days between the years of 1951-1963, the heyday of swing and some of the iconic screen goddesses of that era. The show itself was described as ‘The Big Band night of the year ‘ and it didn’t disappoint.
Pete long and his orchestra were amazing with some truly talented musicians within it. Particularly the trumpet solo which was outstanding. Kevin Fitzsimmons portrayed Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bobby Darrin perfectly. His rendition of That’s Life was like listening to Sinatra himself. I would have liked to have heard maybe one more from Dean Martin. At times the comedic element between the cast was a little cliché and out dated but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the show.
For me though the highlight of the show was Kitty Le Roar, with her portrayal of icons such as Grace Kelly, Peggy Lee and Marilyn Monroe. Her performance was effortless and she oozed class, glamour and confidence on the stage. With her many costume changes, she was able to bring to life the glamour and beauty of these 50’s icons. Her range was phenomenal and her vocals were exquisite. One of the best female vocalists I have ever heard and she stole the show. I would totally recommend going to the show if you get the chance. It is a must for any Sinatra fan and if you want to revisit the glamorous era that this show portrays and it will take you there.
