Someone Like You – The Adele Songbook at The Hawth Crawley Review

My mum and I set off to The Hawth in Crawley on a very cold Sunday evening to watch the Adele tribute Someone Like You – The Adele Song Book. The artist performing The Adele Songbook is Katie Markham, winner of Graham Norton’s BBC Adele Special, who has had rave reviews so our expectations were running high.

All the seats at The Hawth have a really great view of the stage and as we took our seats near the front we had perfect visibility of both Katie and the band. The stage set up is pared back with no fancy gimmicks, just drums, keyboards and two backing singers. The performance is backed by a full-size video screen showing various relevant images.

The show started strongly with Hello, confirming our expectations that this was going to be a fantastic evening’s entertainment. Katie then went on to explain that the performance will cover Adele’s three record-breaking albums 19, 21 and 25 and as per the title of the show some of the tunes that had inspired her songbook. The first half rolled out hit after hit, some with minimal backing and just pure vocals or acoustic guitar which was completely enthralling. Katie also sung three fantastic versions of tracks from George Michael, Etta James and The Cure as these are bands that started Adele’s love of music. An eclectic mix from the 40’s to the 90’s they were all sung with passion and sounded amazing. The first half ended with the much more upbeat Rumour Has It leaving the audience clapping as the curtain closed.

The second half continued the theme with hits such as Chasing Pavements, Make You Feel My Love & Set Fire To The Rain, closing with an amazing vocal performance to Skyfall. After a short break the band returned with an encore of Someone Like You, this was followed by Rolling in the Deep during which Katie introduced the band and they each did a short solo to showcase their talents. A well-deserved standing ovation followed.

We saw this production at The Hawth in Crawley which is easy to get to and has plenty of free parking. The bar area is comfortable and relaxing and well stocked with both drinks, snacks and high-quality ice creams. We both had the Honeycomb ice cream and it was delicious and not overly expensive with a standard theatre price of £3 per tub.

We have seen a lots of tribute bands in our time and although no singer will be exactly as the original we considered Katie Markham to be an excellent performer and amazing vocalist. We loved the way it wasn’t over produced so the vocals were clear and the band, who were brilliant, complimented the sound and not overpowered it. If you like Adele’s music I would not hesitate to recommend getting tickets for Someone Like You – The Adele Songbook. It may not be so uplifting as some of the tributes out there but if you are after multi award winning music sung by an amazing and passionate vocalist get your tickets now.
