Someone Like You – The Adele Songbook at the New Alexandra Theatre Review

Last night myself and my husband went to the New Alexander Theatre in Birmingham to see Someone Like You – The Adele Songbook.

The show recreates songs from Adele’s three record breaking albums 19, 21, and 25 including smash hits Chasing Pavements, Make you feel my love, Set fire to the rain, Someone like you, Hello, Rolling in the deep and the multi-million seller Skyfall, and also included some of the songs that inspired Adele to be the singer she is today.

The stage set up was very basic with no fancy gimmicks, just drums, keyboard, a bass guitar, another guitarist, and two backing singers / dancers. At the back of the stage there is a full-size video screen showing various images.

Katie Markham, who appeared on BBC’s Graham Norton Adele Special, was handpicked by Adele herself to do the shows. She opened with Adele’s Hello and straight away we could tell we were in for a fantastic night. In the first half Katie sang hit after hit and also included songs by Etta James, George Michael and The Cure which had inspired Adele to sing. The first half ended with the upbeat hit Rumour. In the interval we waited in anticipation for the second half which started with the hit Set Fire to the rain which was amazing. Katie is an incredible singer and I could not take my eyes of her and her body language which drew you in and she sang with such emotion. She closed the show with the theme tune to James Bond Skyfall and ended to a standing ovation from the audience. She then came back onto do an encore ending with Someone Like you.

The show was at The New Alexander Theatre in Birmingham, which is not a theatre I had visited before. When I saw the name, I expected it to be a modern theatre but I was pleasantly surprised when actually going through to my seats to see that it was still like the good old theatres inside and even had the little binoculars for hire for £1.

The bar area had a young gentleman playing a piano and the area was quite modern with one large bar and one small bar, selling a range of cocktails, wine, champagne and bottled beers. There are also some snacks available. If you don’t want to leave your seats during the interval you can download an app on your smart phone and order drinks and snacks and they will be brought to your seats.

I would definitely recommend any Adele fans to see this show, it is truly amazing, and you can clearly see that Katie Markham is passionate about the songs she sings. I would definitely rate this show 5 out of 5.

Rating: 5/5
