As a fan of musicals, I had heard of Sunset Boulevard and knew some of the songs but to be honest had no idea what it was about! Based on the legendary 1950’s film I was really hoping I would enjoy this Tony Award-winning musical and I was not disappointed. The plot was intriguing with twists and turns right to the very end.
We watched the show at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. I have been here many times before and it is my favourite theatre. The theatre itself is visually stunning both inside and out (especially at night when it is all lit up outside) with plenty of payable car parking nearby. The staff are always friendly and helpful. It is easily located in Bradford City Centre
Sunset Boulevard is a story of love and obsession which leads to tragedy. Joe Gillis (Danny Mac) is a struggling writer running from debt collectors who crosses paths with Norma Desmond (Ria Jones) a rich, older, reclusive former silent screen star at her mansion on Sunset Boulevard. Norma hires Joe to edit a script she has written, her masterpiece, that she believes will resurrect her career to its former glory. Norma falls for Joe and manipulates him to stay with her promising him everything her money and fame can provide. Joe agrees to this for his own selfish reasons but it all starts to fall apart when Joe falls for another woman.
The whole cast was excellent, especially Ria Jones and Danny Mac in the lead roles. Ria’s voice was simply sensational. There was a full orchestra playing live throughout which really added another level to the performance.
I simply loved the show from beginning to end. The songs fitted in perfectly with the plot and brought the whole story alive. The standing ovation the cast received at the end of the show was thoroughly deserved.
Tickets cost from £19 to £49 (booking fees may apply).
