Aldi Feed the Family Challenge Review

Reviewed by Louise Totton

Yet again, we were really excited to take on Aldi’s Feed the Family for a Week for £70 Challenge. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children. We eat breakfast together every morning, we need to get two packed lunches a day out of our weekly shop, and evening meals. We also very often have an additional adult dine with us on an evening, so it can be pretty difficult to make the budget stretch.

I have been doing the vast majority of my shopping at Aldi for several months now, and am getting more and more impressed as the range increases. We always used to split our shop between Aldi and another German discount supermarket, and used to find them pretty similar. As time has gone on though, Aldi has become much, much better, and bar the specialist “free from” food that I need to buy, I really can do a full week’s shop in Aldi now.

As a family, we are traditionally not massive meat eaters, partly because of the cost. However, all of the meat we have bought from Aldi has been excellent quality and really very affordable. This week, we have based our meals on turkey mince, chicken thighs, a gammon joint and a whole chicken.

I have cooked a family meal from fresh every single day, and we have thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals. We have had turkey mince and chickpea curry, chicken thighs in tomato sauce, roast gammon with mixed roast vegetables, slow cooked shredded BBQ chicken with wedges as well as aubergine curry and sausages with Yorkshire puddings and mash.

We have discovered peppered ham trimmings, which we are really impressed with – real, chunky ham, slightly misshaped but fabulous of a substantial ham sandwich. My husband has taken a ham sandwich to work with him every day and was most disappointed when it was finished.

This week, including all snacks and a top up midweek for milk and bread, we have spent a shade over £60 which we think is fantastic. Last week, we shared a takeaway as a treat and spent £30. That’s a full half a week’s shop, and it really hammers home just how possible it is to eat good, wholesome and food on a very reasonable budget.

We also really enjoy the Specialbuys that Aldi always have available. Last month, I was absolutely delighted to see their Gluten Free Event in my local store. I was able to buy bread, pasta and cookies for a fraction of the cost that I am used to paying at the main supermarkets, and it’s a range that I really hope that Aldi can continue to expand on a more permanent basis.

Another fantastic week of shopping, and £10 left for the holiday food fund.
