They’re creepy and they’re cookey, they’re all together ookey, mysterious and spooky, the Addams family…. The song that has been in my head since taking my daughter; Heidi aged 6, to see the excellent performance of the Addams Family at Waterside Arts Centre in Sale for the Saturday matinee performance at the weekend.

I am a huge fan of the Addams family and having watched it recently with my daughter, I was greatly delighted to have the opportunity to see the musical version of the familiar film. Heidi is getting to the age where she wants to watch more grown up things, rather than the younger shows she has seen in the past. So I thought this was a great opportunity to take her to see a musical which would not boggle her mind in being too grown up for her.

The show begins with the ever so catchy theme tune, that I am still walking around singing to myself, performed by the all singing, dancing cast of the Meighan Youth Theatre. They are dancing on their ancestors grave for the Addams family annual gathering. The story is set around Wednesday Addams’s new relationship with Lucas, a boy she had met in the park while out with her cross bow. Lucas has proposed and Wednesday is in a dilemma as what to do, she has told her father Gomez but does not want her mother Morticia to know until after they have had dinner.

The cast put on an amazing show, my daughter and I had a real good time. I asked Heidi in the interval if she was enjoying herself and she said to me ‘Mummy it’s really, really good.’ I especially liked the character of Gomez Addams, who put on real charming, smooth performance. The whole cast were amazing though, I could not fault any of them. They truly put their heart and soul into the show.

In parts the show was extremely funny, with some jokes that related into the real world, such as questioning Donald Trump’s ability to be the leader of the Republic party – this got a big laugh from the thoroughly engaged audience. The songs and dance routines performed on point, with a similarity to Wicked.

Overall, my daughter and I had a lovely afternoon. My daughter said that it was the best show she had seen, and now wants to see all of the Addams family films…

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
