The Bodyguard at the Theatre Royal Glasgow Review

3-29 December 2018

The Bodyguard The Musical opened last night at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow. It opened with a bang and captivated the audience from start to end with the stage version of the iconic film The Bodyguard which started Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston.

Based on the film by Lawrence Kasdan, The Bodyguard The Musical is directed by Thea Sharrock and opened in the West End in December 2012.

Alexandra Burke played Houston’s role of Rachel Marron again after previously taking on the role in 2014 and 2015. The power vocals are perfectly suited to Burke’s voice with numbers such as Saving all my Love and I Will Always Love You. The harmonies of Run to You which Burke sang with Micha Richardson, who played Rachel’s sister Nicki, were just beautiful.

Benoit Marechal was Frank Farmer, the Bodyguard employed to keep Marron safe from her stalker. His feeling for her comprises her safety and eventually he takes the bullet for her but lives to tell the tale.

A special mention goes to Caelan Edil, a superstar in the making. As Marron’s ten-year-old son, Fletcher he sang and danced his heart out.

Philip Atkinson cleverly portrayed the stalker… less was definitely more!  The staging and lighting created atmosphere and anticipation.

The Theatre Royal is the perfect setting for The Bodyguard and the grandeur of the Theatre compliments the scenery of the show. Situated on Hope Street, the Theatre Royal is a short walk from Buchanan Galleries and Queen Street Station. The area is well served with public transport. The entrance foyer is airy and spacious and internally the theatre is comfortable. We sat in row F of the Dress Circle where visibility was excellent.

The Bodyguard is on right through the Christmas period until 29th December.
