We were given the opportunity to attend the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham on 26 March 2017 to see The Circus of Horrors The Never-ending Nightmare tour. This is completely different to the stereotypical type of shows/tours we have visited previously. I have to say this is definitely not your standard circus performance. Even though it is truly weird, it was amazing and oozing with so much talent. It was loud, amusing, scary, toe curling, and not for the easily offended.
The Circus of Horrors has a range of acts; the little dwarf does unspeakable things with Henry the Hoover, talk about ‘blow job’ literally, it was a laugh out loud moment. Later he also swings a cannon ball from his lower region. More traditional acts participated, there was an act called ‘CarnEvil’ they did the limbo under fire, skipping with a flaming skipping rope. There was a sword swallower by the name of Hannibal Hellmurto, this was eye opening moment, but worrying at the same time. There were also numerous high rope acts, one was just supported by her ponytail! I must admit this was good but it did look very painful. The sinister scary clowns also made an appearance. They venture around the audience, I did find these creepy.
The performance is delivered with background music from a band playing heavy metal music. There were numerous women within the show, all of which worn minimal clothing. Some stripping to the bear minimum at times. All outfits fitted well with the performance and the scary makeup was amazing. The circus did succeed in gaining audience participation, which was good.
There was the odd bit of singing throughout. To be honest I struggled with this and I personally do not think it adds anything to the show. The hoopist and contortionist were good and I thoroughly enjoyed their performances. It is the first time I have ever seen anyone open a bottle of beer using their eye and I found the eating of glass a little gross. There was no lack of blood and grossness.
I have never ever seen anything of this nature before, but I have to say it was not a bad experience and I am so glad I went to watch. It is truly an eye-opener. I would consider seeing this again if it came to town. The circus has an accumulation of extremely odd talented individuals. Make sure you visit for an experience you will never forgot, if and when it comes along to a town near you!!
The theatre itself is modern and ascetically pleasing. It has a piano bar which is airy and welcoming. This is a nice area to enjoy a pro-show drink and interval drinks. There is a high choice of beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The bar also serves snacks. At the interval ice creams are on offer. All refreshments appeared to be reasonable priced. Staff are helpful, friend, accommodating and polite. There any many toilets dotted around. The theatre is spacious and the seating offers good stage view we were sat within the dress circle.
Get yourselves along to this tour for an experience you will never forget.
