We visited the Cuban on 3rd July. We travelled via the Northern Line on the Tube to Chalk Farm underground station and walked just down the road to the Stables Market.
Just walking through the market is an experience alone; foods, sights and sounds that make you forget where you are. The Cuban was situated in the heart of this all. As you enter the restaurant you immediately see that this was once a used stable building and you can’t help thinking of all those from years gone by who have walked these steps before us!
We were greeted by Otis who showed us to a booth with enough space for 6 people. Looking around there were several booths and also some smaller tables. The bar stretched the whole length of the building and featured an impressive display of alcohol in bottles. I noticed a few beers on tap, bottled beer and cider. There was also a selection of red, white or rose wines, champagne, plenty of different rums and cocktails too. There was a lovely atmosphere throughout as Cuban music was playing and you were transported off to another place in time. Flags were draped from the ceiling as well as bird cages and old style lanterns on the walls. a few TV’s were spotted for those that wished to chill.
We ordered cocktails… a Bellini (peach and Prosecco) and Royal Mojito (rum, brown sugar, mint and lime). Both were delicious.
The menu was varied ranging from Tapas, Paella, salads and Cuban style meats. we ordered Calamari Romana served with sour cream and lemon as a starter, Lechon Asado con Espinacas y chorizo (pork, spinach and chorizo), Rump steak, Cajun fries, Cuban slaw and garlic mushrooms and Belgian chocolate brownie for dessert. The portion size was plentiful and all the food was tasty and cooked beautifully.
There were at least 6 or 7 members of staff and they were always busy and friendly. The place was clean and tidy and seemed a popular place for all ages. There was an outside area which is great for warm summer evenings such as this time of year.
The toilets were the only let down, but they are outside the building and up the stairs. It seems they belong to the whole of Stables Market rather than the Cuban restaurant itself.
The Cuban is available for private hire, has special offers on certain days, happy hours and hosts events such as salsa and live Cuban bands.
I really liked it there and will make a point to go back again.
