We parked in the car park attached to the Guild Hall in Preston, 4 hours for £3.20 which we thought was good value. There is a covered walkway straight in to the Guild Hall complex, so no need to worry about taking your coats with you!
The Charter Theatre is a modern build, seating approx. 2000. Tonight felt like it was a full house, and there was a real buzz in the theatre waiting for the show to start.
The Drifters came on stage – not the original line up from 1953, but the ‘new generation’ Drifters – 4 fabulous vocalists approved by the original members. They were supported by a superb 4 piece backing band.
There was a big screen at the rear of the stage showing archive footage of the early Drifters performances.
During the first half of the show The Drifters performed lots of the classic hits – “under the boardwalk”, “some kind of wonderful”, “up on the roof”, to name a few. The audience went wild, with lots of people dancing after the first few songs.
A small (and the only) criticism would be that there was no announcement in the theatre to ask people not to take pictures/videos on their phones, so lots of people were doing this. Quite annoying and distracting! We noted that there were a couple of small signs scattered around informing that photos/recording was not permitted, but clearly nobody saw these.
The second half of the show was a celebration of classic hits by other stars of the era, such as Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5 and Jackie Wilson – all brilliantly performed by The Drifters tonight. This fabulous evening was rounded off with “Saturday night at the movies” and “more than a number”. It seemed like the entire audience was up dancing in their seats, truly great entertainment!
The sound quality and lighting were excellent, the whole performance was slick and tight, the band and the audience all loving the show. Some indoor pyrotechnics concluded a thoroughly good show.
We thought that the ‘new generation’ Drifters were just as brilliant as the original line up. Catch them if you get the opportunity!
