The show started on time at 7.30pm. The Ferneham Hall was about two thirds full. Apparently, Mario Kombou (Elvis) has played at this venue several times before and was well known to the audience. This is the first time I had seen him. He has been performing his tribute to Elvis for over 20 years. He starred in the hit West End production of Jailhouse Rock. Mario won the Images of the King competition in Memphis, Tennessee.
He had a four-piece band with him and two female vocals. From the start of the show he had the audience with him and it was clear to see he was very well practiced. If you closed your eyes you would have thought that ‘the King’ was on stage. It began at the start of Elvis’s career when he appeared at The Grand Old Oprey. It then followed his career through music and many costume changes. This included his time in the army in 1958 and mentioned the death of his mother in the same year. This was supported by actual footage of Elvis showing on a screen at the back of the stage. Elvis stared in a number of films and Mario featured many songs from this period. It finished with his final performance in Las Vegas.
There was much audience participation with sing alongs! The atmosphere was fantastic with people dancing in the aisles, clapping and thoroughly enjoying the show. Mario had so many costume changes relating to whichever song he was singing.
I went to this show with a friend who is disabled (not in a wheelchair). We were sitting on the tiered section and she found it very difficult getting up the stairs with no handrails to hold onto, this proved more difficult on the way down. There were limited disabled parking bays and we had to park in the nearby multi storey car park which meant a difficult walk with steps. The theatre was warm and staff helpful.
Mario will be returning to Ferneham Hall in June so if you love rock and roll go to see this show, I would highly recommend it. I will certainly be going again in June.
