The Embankment restaurant in Bedford is a beautiful mock-Tudor building nestled, as the name suggests, a short walk from the town centre on the banks of the river Ouse, the building is nicely decorated and the lighting is subdued which adds to the already fantastic atmosphere that hits you as you walk into the bar area, we went on a Friday evening, and found out to our delight that it was “seafood night” and that they had a jazz duet playing live music, we opted to dine in the bar area, and were seated at a cosy table and were brought a bowl of olives and bread.

The menu is definitely not your standard pub/restaurant fayre, with some wonderful looking dishes and taste combinations on offer, my wife opted for the “sweet potato lasagne with jalapeño pesto and homemade garlic bread” whist I had the “pan fried salmon on crab risotto” from the seafood night menu, I loved the fact that the specials board is brought to you, rather than having to go and search for it!

The food arrived promptly, steaming hot and well-presented and was nothing short of gorgeous, the flavours in my dish complimented each other very well, and although I am no connoisseur I could tell that the dishes had been well thought out by a chef that knows their business.

The dessert menu was again full of choices with a lot of alcoholic options which, had I not have been driving would have happily gone for, as it was the sticky toffee pudding I opted for was divine, and my wife’s crème brulee was flavoursome.

Our dining experience was one that I would happily repeat, it was a perfect combination of brilliant venue, excellent food and fantastically attentive service.

When doing reviews we are always careful to see how the staff react to other patrons, and at the Embankment we found the level of service given to us to be no different from that given to everyone else, every staff member we met (even before we had introduced ourselves) was polite, and attentive, and it is no small point that the relaxed, laid back style of the venue is reflected in the people that work there.

We found it interesting that there is no children’s menu, but this is no bad thing as the dishes can be adjusted for smaller appetites, so therefore it’s a good opportunity for children to expand their food experience without the lure of “chicken nuggets and chips etc…”

The menu prices are slightly higher than you would usually expect to pay, but, this is reflected in the quality of the food being served, and personally I would pay the extra.

Worth noting although not directly related to the venue was that during our time there, watching others enjoying a meal or drink, we noticed all without exception were happily talking and engaging with each other and not a mobile phone was in sight!, that doesn’t happen often these days.

We are aiming to go to this venue again with our children during the summer so that we can take the opportunity to use the outside dining facilities that offer a lovely view of the river.

We give The Embankment a well-deserved 5 out of 5.
