London’s latest pop-up bar, with un-spoilt views of Tower Bridge
The newly opened Lawn Bar sits adjacent to The Tower Hotel, The Thames and Tower Bridge. Could there be a more glamorous spot for evening drinks in the City of London?
The area outside the hotel, right on the river used to be a dormant space until new manager Billy Hughes recognised its potential for London’s newest evening venue. The Lawn is an open-air pop-up bar attached to The Tower Hotel, complete with room charge facilities at the tiki-hut bar and swish vintage caravan food stalls. Nostalgic British food meets after-work, pre-party holiday bar, with the ever-changing views over The Thames as the river traffic sails by and the views of the Tower of London ensure that there is always a talking point.
Unlike other bars in the area, it has a summer feel, cantering for both guests of the hotel and near-by workers in the City. The outdoor styling has been thought through with grass, patio chairs, food cooked fresh and even blankets if the British evenings turn cold. The bar will make you Pimm’s or beer is on tap as if this were your favourite all-inclusive resort on The Algarve. Surprisingly, the weather doesn’t affect you as much as you would think and is compensated by the fact you have uninterrupted views of the river and apartments on the South Bank, and you can even access the hotel’s Wi-Fi. Anyone for a bit of alfresco working? If you don’t fancy the alcoholic selection, there is always Starbucks 10 steps across the street, which is also part of the hotel.
The staff are happy to be on hand in the sunshine, making sure guests are making the most of the view as well as the hotel facilities (there’s no snobbery about guests going into the hotel) and each of the tables and deck chairs are waited on by bar staff. The Tower’s standards for cuisine spill over from the restaurants inside out to the cobbled pavements made famous by the London Marathon, and onto the grassed area of The Lawn. If you need a talking point other than the architecture, Giant Jenga dot the grassed area for guests to play.
This is a great spot for meeting friends of having drinks after work. A few hours here and you feel like you’re a million miles from London yet still in the shadows of our history. Clients would love this equally, but for me, it was just the fact that The Tower got this just right for all types of guests and make everyone feel so welcome, that it would be a great addition to a summer in the City for anyone.
Opening hours: Monday – Sunday: 12pm till late
Billy Hughes, General Manager of the Tower Hotel, London, said: “The Lawn is the perfect location to enjoy summer in London. With the best view of Tower Bridge, and specially created drinks and street food, it’s a relaxing location to catch up with friends and colleagues.”
With events such as the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race on its doorstep, the bar is an ideal spot for sporting enthusiasts too.
