This morning, I took my six year old granddaughter, Heidi, to the Lowry Theatre in Salford, Manchester to watch Topsy Turvy’s production of The Lost Present… A Christmas Adventure! The show was set in the small cosy Studio, which is a lovely venue ideal for families with young children. As we waited for the show to begin, the two presenters, Hannah and Claire, from Topsy Turvy wandered around the audience introducing themselves to all the children and their carers and making us feel very welcome.

The Lost Present is a beautiful, heart-warming story of a doll named Elva who accidentally falls from Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve and has to make her way through the garden in the dark to a little girl’s house before she awakens on Christmas Day. Elva has help along the way from Rowan the Robin, Harris the Hedgehog, an extremely funny Sophia Squirrel and a rather mean Snowman. When Sophia was searching for her hidden nut, she descended into the audience perching on everyone’s heads, creating much fun and laughter. At one point Claire caused hilarity by throwing iced water into the audience. There is a huge amount of audience participation in this production, from getting involved in performing a dance to singing Christmas songs. The presenters used handmade puppets and beautifully simple scenery to tell the tale. My granddaughter was captivated by this performance and had a really lovely time. All the young children as well as their older carers were having an amazing time. A really nice touch was when the children were invited to meet the performers Claire and Hannah and have photographs taken with them as well as Elva after the show.

If you are looking for a fun way to keep your young children amused for an hour over the Christmas holidays, I would really recommend going to see this show. The show is aimed at children aged from three to seven years old.
