I was very much delighted to have the opportunity to be a guest at the above opening night of the famous Dame Agatha Christie’s legendary play the classic among murder thrillers The Mousetrap very cleverly directed by Ian Watt-Smith. It has by far the longest initial run of any play in history. This spectacular show is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in history of British theatre. The Mousetrap celebrates 60 years on stage and it’s going on tour for the very first time and aren’t we very fortunate for it to hit the Grove Theatre in Dunstable. I can see why it’s so popular as on finding my seats in row H, I think I only managed to count around 2 empty seats, the show was practically sold out and now I realise why!

Without giving too much away the scene is set when a group of people gather in a country house cut off by the snow and to their horror they discover there is a murderer on the loose. Who could it possibly be? The ending has a real twist. One by one the suspicious characters reveal some of their sordid past and the audience are left in shuddering suspense practically the whole evening. The cast were all true professional stars of the highest quality, all with very convincing personalities and character, some very humorous too. I particularly liked Christopher Wren and disliked Mrs Boyle (but I’m sure that was the intention), she irritated everyone from the moment she entered the stage. The entire cast were amazing and how fortunate to see them all (some very good talent, ranging from Anne Kavanngh, whose TV credits include Doctors, Footballers Wives and Insiders and Michael Fenner, who played Mr Paravicini was a lively member of the cast, very charming and super great Italian accent! The costumes all very appropriate and the stage setting was marvellous, along with special effects, you really felt like you was a guest staying at the country house.

A real very clever murder mystery which was very entertaining. Apart from the laughter here and there the audience were as quiet as mice the entire evening as didn’t want to miss a thing!

Well done to all that created such a wonderful show.

Word of warning you are bound to sing Three Blind Mice over and over after the event. That’s all I will say!
