Last night an early Christmas present was delivered to The Lowry, Manchester in the form of five very talented and very dapper looking young men. The Overtones treated the jam packed audience to a Good Ole Fashioned Christmas. The Overtones were due on stage at 7:30 but as the audience were still arriving after this time including celebrities Shayne Ward and James Hill they didn’t get on stage till 8pm.

As soon as the lights went down the ladies in the audience (myself included) screamed and squealed with excitement. As they took to the stage in their matching suits and a full band behind them I knew this was going to be a great show. The stage was decorated with Christmas trees and fairy lights making sure we all got in the festive spirit. They kicked off the show with the Christmas classic It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, at this point half the audience jumped up and started to dance by their seats. Not the usual theatre experience you would expect and it did cause quite a stir in the stalls. Obviously not everyone wanted to get up on their feet even though The Overtones were encouraging it so some people now had a restricted view. There was an elderly couple in front of us who got up to leave after the second song as they couldn’t see anything, however I overheard them talking to an usher who transferred them to the circle.

The first half of the show started with two Christmas songs but then they played some tracks off their previous albums. Highlights for me were Sh-Boom, Can’t Take My eyes Off You and Gambling Man. Each and every voice is so unique but together they blend so well, at points it was mesmerising listening to them.

Towards the end of the first half there was an microphone issue so we had to make do without the lovely tones of Lachie’s voice but I am pleased to say his microphone was up and running for the last song of the half ˜Let it Snow”.

The second half we were treated to songs from their new album Good Ol Fashioned Christmas and I actually have the album already so listened to it on the way and I have to say they were just as good live as they are on the CD. Highlights for me were Driving Home for Christmas and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. After watching the guys perform I left feeling so festive and in the mood to party even more. These guys really know how to put on a show and please their audience. With little innuendos and cheeky winks they had the audience in a frenzy. Their dance moves where sleek and they looked amazing. It may have been cold outside in Manchester but it was definitely hot hot hot in The Lowry.
