Me and my mum went to see The Producers at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking last night. I saw the film a few years back so vaguely knew the storyline but nothing could prepare me for how many laugh out loud moments there were with plenty of “did he really say that moments” too. It was utterly hilarious with lots of adult humour.
The Producers is based on the award-winning movie of the same name by Mel Brooks. The story is about a Broadway producer called Max Bialystock, played by Cory English, whose latest play is a big flop and after meeting an accountant called Leo Bloom, played by comedian Jason Manford, who turns up to do his books they realise there is just as much money to be made in a flop of the play so they join forces to produce the worst show ever. They meet Franz Liebkind, who is a escaped Nazi, and choose his play Springtime for Hitler thinking it’s a guaranteed flop. They then pay a visit to the worst director Roger de Bris and then Ulla comes to audition but they don’t actually have a part in the play for her but both Max and Leo are smitten so decide they are sure they can find her a part.
So now armed with the worst of the worst they are certain they have the worst play ever, what could possibly go wrong?
I won’t spoil it by saying what happens in the end. There are some incredible song and dance routines that are full of glamour and humour. The story was also very easy to follow meaning you could sit back relax and really enjoy a fun exciting performance. My favourite scene is probably the one with the old ladies who Max has to keep happy so that they’ll continue their financial help of the play and the old ladies all want a piece of him, it’s so comical you really must see this. This show far exceeded my expectations the only downside is that I thought the second-half wasn’t quite as good as the first half.
The New Victoria Theatre has plenty of parking only a short walk away and it’s so easy to find with plenty of signs. The theatre is one of my favourites it’s so modern with plenty of space to sit and have a drink before the show starts and the staff are always very friendly and approachable.
A fab night out!
