The Saboteurs is a complex World War II drama based on a true story and casts among others Anna Friel as Captain Julie Smith. Set predominantly in snow covered Norway the story tells of several missions by the Norwegians, helped by the British and subsequently the Americans to sabotage a “heavy water” factory.
Nobel prize winning German scientist, Werner Heisenberg, is helping the Nazis to develop an atomic bomb using the heavy water produced at the factory in the Norwegian mountains. In order to stop the Nazi war machine the Allies develop a plot to blow the factory up by British and Norwegian forces as an air assault cannot guarantee success. After the first failed attempt and desperate to stop the advancement of the Nazi’s nuclear programme a second team of Norwegian solders are dropped into the mountains and an edge of the seat expedition to bomb the heavy water room begins.
Although the plan is successful the Germans soon have the heavy water production back up and running and it’s now the turn of the Americans who are somewhat heavier handed in their approach.
After the failure of the American mission and with the Nazi’s wanting to move the production to Germany, the final chance to destroy the heavy water presents itself to the Allies. Will the Allies be successful with their plan to finally destroy the heavy water, you will have to wait until the final episode to find out.
The plot is compelling, moves quickly and has a somewhat tragic ending but is captivating viewing. Just when you think it’s all over a twist to the story of the Nazi’s nuclear programme is also an interesting addition to the ending. A quality cast and fantastic scenery add to this fact based drama to make Saboteurs a must watch.
