The Sound of Music at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review

23-27 January 2018

Reviewed by Emily Crombie

The Sound of Music opened at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow on 23 January 2018 delighting the audience of all ages, with two and a half hours of song, dance and drama.

The show is produced by Bill Kenwright and directed by Martin Connor with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein.

Based on the true story of the Von Trapp family, The Sound of Music was written originally by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse as a play before the songs were added and it opened in Broadway in 1959. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer starred in the 1965 film of The Sound of Music.

Most of the audience were familiar with the Von Trapp family’s story. Set in Austria, Maria becomes governess for the Von Trapp family as she considers her suitability to life as a nun. Looking after the seven Von Trapp children Maria expands their horizons beyond Captain Von Trapp’s militaristic approach to family life.

Maria and the Captain marry before he is called up to fight in the second World War. As they were against the Nazi regime, they used the singing contest to make their bid for freedom with the assistance of the nuns and escape over the alps to Switzerland.

Lucy O’Byrne, runner up in The Voice in 2015, plays the role of Maria beautifully injecting a good mix of humour with a delightful voice, singing many of the well-known musical numbers of the show including The Sound of Music, My Favourite Things and Do-Re-Mi. Captain Von Trapp is brought to life on stage by Neil McDermott.

The King’s Theatre is located on Bath Street in Glasgow’s city centre. It is within walking distance of both rail and bus stations and there are multi-storey carparks within the local area. The traditional theatre is full of character… I’m sure the walls could tell a few stories! The staff were helpful and accommodating.
