On Friday the 2nd May I was delighted to be invited along to the Apollo Theatre in Newport, Isle of Wight to watch an ‘Original Theatre Company’ play called ‘The Truth Untold’. I took along a good friend and upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and shown where we could get drinks and where to sit for the show.
The theatre is small and cosy, allowing a small audience a great view of the stage where we eagerly awaited the performance to start. This is the blurb given about the play by the ‘Original Theatre’ ‘This new one hour drama was inspired by a Wilfred Owen war poem, and ten per cent of ticket sales will be donated to the Armed Forces Veterans mental health charity, Combat Stress. The play tells what happens when two former school friends meet up again. One is a junior minister in the Coalition Government; the other a social care manager in a town where a young boy has died in care.’
During the performance, the audience are brought into the story by the two main characters, showing the different aspect of their lives, their previous friendship and their current jobs and relationships. Throughout there are very current issues and the storyline along with the great acting, made my friend and I get ‘sucked’ into the performance and made us identify with the main characters. The only issue we had was due to the small cast, the character changes sometimes confused us but it in no way affected the performance and once you had understood who they were after that characters appearance, you didn’t notice the changes as much. The biggest praise I have is for the actor’s passionate and believable performances, especially the argument scenes, you could tell there was no holding back and it was very believable.
Overall, it was a great experience and I can’t wait for their next play, it’s a great way to see wonderful local talent.
