“What a lot of hairy-faced men there are around nowadays” – the audience are told as asked to look around for anyone with a beard! If you’re a fan of The Twits like I am that first line will get you gripped and ready for an adventure through a tale of two very inordinate people. My six year old was quickly captivated by the Muggle Wumps, especially as they’d been talking to us before the show began. Our first task was to begin searching for a hairy, bearded man to point out to the Muggle Wumps. There were several men squirming in their seats as the story began of how disgusting and dirty they could be. After pointing and laughing at all these poor men and declaring one as “Beardy Man”, our attention was drawn to steel walls displaying “The Twits”. These exploded to the ground to reveal Mr Twit not only looking disgusting, dirty and, you’d imagine, very smelly but he was “busy” on the toilet and being extremely revolting about it! The theatre erupted with many a “yuck”, “ergh” and “disgusting” but everyone was loving it! Mrs Twit wasn’t much better with her ill-fitting clothes, terrible, greasy skin and bad hair, reading trash magazines.
The muggle-wump musicians and story tellers were enthralling and great friends to the audience. They kept participation going throughout and their playing skills combined with their acrobatics were astounding!
During the performance, The Twits disappeared to get guns in an attempt to kill birds for bird pie. When they returned with super-soakers, my daughter and I knew we were in trouble. She was jumping out of her seat to get sprayed with water and the theatre was filled with howls of laughter.
Later we had to turn upside-down to trick the twits and this made for a lot of fun and yet more laughter. The whole performance was exceptional and one that I will look to book again.
