The Long Riders follows the exploits of the infamous Wild West outlaw gang James/Younger with Jesse James and Cole Younger set just after the Civil War. The James/Younger gang is made up of 4 sets of brothers – James, Younger, Miller and Ford. The James/Younger gang were notorious for robbing trains and banks.

After a bank robbery goes wrong and Ed Miller (Dennis Quaid) kills a man for no reason Jesse James (James Keach) kicks him out of the gang. They decide to split up for a while to let the heat die down and go back home to their wives and girlfriends.

After getting back together the decide to go north to Northfield, Minnesota to rob a bank but the town has been warned a trap is laid for them, and the raid goes disastrously wrong ending up with most of the gang dying, dead or in prison.

Overall, The Long Riders is a great Western with some great shootouts. The final shootout is alone worth watching the film for and is excellent, filmed brilliantly. With actual brothers used to play the parts of the brothers in the gang in adds a touch of authenticity to the story.

While the story is slow at times the action, story, filming and direction are great and if you love watching Westerns you will not be disappointed.
