Thriller Live has just kicked off its 2018 UK tour and I could not resist the opportunity to join in with the celebration of the music, of the King of Pop. Taking us through Michael Jackson’s legendary career in music, we are reminded why Michael Jackson remains the undisputed king.

Thriller Live incorporates tracks from Michael Jackson’s early Motown days with the Jackson 5, and songs such as ABC and I Want You Back. These are performed by such an infectiously energetic cast it is hard to remain seated. Showing us how Michael experimented with different genres and rather surprisingly had an amazing command over not only pop but rock, RnB and soul too, we see how Michael evolved and used his music to inspire and educate, developing some trademarks along the way such as the moonwalk and sequined glove.

A highlight of the show was the cast arguing over the better album out of Thriller and Bad. In retrospect this was an argument that could have gone on all night because how do you choose? Despite this the cast came together to deliver music video quality performances of Dangerous, Smooth Criminal and Thriller. These were exceptional, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second. The dancers were moonwalking, leg kicking, thrusting and ‘shamoaning’ all over the place, it really was a treat. In addition, vocalist Rory Taylor performed a breath-taking rendition of She’s Out Of My Life with such emotion, highlighting what a beautiful song it really is.

The vocalists, Britt Quentin, Shaquille Hemmans and Adriana Louise were superb. However, do not expect a tribute act, this is a celebration of Michael Jackson’s music and the singers do not try to impersonate. Having said that, Sean Christopher was an incredible dancer, embodying Jackson’s movements scarily well.

The Regent Theatre is a wonderful theatre with friendly staff, great facilities, a wide selection of snacks and drinks, and reasonably priced parking nearby at John Street car park. I would absolutely recommend Thriller Live to all music lovers, dancers and of course those who want the memory of the King of Pop to live on.
