I was looking forward to seeing The Rod Stewart Musical, Tonight’s the Night at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow and I certainly was not let down!

The show was superbly written by Ben Elton to encapsulate a wide variety of Rod Stewart’s hits without feeling too contrived, such as Gasoline Alley, Maggie May, Stay With Me, What Am I Gonna Do?

An energetic opening set the scene the Ben Heathcote perfectly portraying Stuart, the nervous geek in love with Mary (Jenna Lee-James). He sells his soul to the devil in exchange for Rod Stewart’s soul and transforms into the rock legends himself. Stuart is drawn to the limelight leaving Mary heartbroken but as with all good stories, there is a happy ending! The show ended with everyone on their feet in a heartfelt rendition of Sailing.

A tremendous and consistent vocal performance by Ben throughout the show replicating the gravely tones of Rod. Jenna Lee-James was also extremely convincing as Mary with a wide vocal range.

The show was certainly stolen by the hilarious Stoner (Ricky Rojas) who gave an outstanding performance showing great chemistry with the other main characters.

The staging was very slick with effective scenery and lighting. The onstage band was fabulous!

I really enjoyed my visit to the King’s Theatre, the staff were very friendly and as theatre’s go, the auditorium was a fairly pleasant temperature. It is centrally located in Bath Street and close to many restaurants offering pre-theatre menu’s.

Tonight’s the Night is a feel good show that makes you want to get to your feet and dance along.  It really is one of the best shows I have seen in a while- definitely 5 stars!!
