I was lucky enough to be sent la pasta dei coltivatori toscani – trottole n.110, ragu di carne bovina di razza maremmana, pecorino rosso volterrano and a half bottle of Astore dell'Uccellina 2006 IGT Maremma Toscana Sangoveseand I have to say it was quick and easy to prepare and tasted awesome.
As advised on the pack, I added pasta to a pan of boiling water and cooked the la pasta dei coltivatori Toscani – Trottole n.110 for 8 minutes which was very quick and simple. (My kind of cooking) Whilst the pasta was cooking I opened the Ragu di carne bovina di razza maremmana and was met by what looked like a traditional homemade pasta sauce that not only looked good but smelt amazing too. Ingredients listed on the label consisted of cow meat of the maremmana breed, tomatoes, onions, carrots, celery, extra virgin olive oil, red wine, salt, pepper and no added extras such as food colourings and additives. Although the label is pretty much all in Italian, I loved that the use by date was written on the label by hand as it made me feel that I was going to eat a traditional, homemade product.
Once the pasta was cooked, I drained it, put it back in the pan, added the ragu and gently stirred and heated it all together. By this time I couldn’t wait to tuck in because the pasta and ragu smelt amazing. After a few minutes, I transferred the contents of the pan to a bowl and shaved on some of the pecorino rosso volterrano cheese. Pecorino rosso volterrano is made from heated sheep’s milk, salt, natural rennet and milk enzymes. It is matured for at least 60 days in order to acquire the full-flavour and aroma characteristic of this kind of cheese and I can totally agree that it has an exceptional aroma. As soon as I opened the vacuum pack, I could smell the matured flavour of the cheese. Mmmmmmmmm!
To accompany my meal, I drank the Astore dell'Uccellina 2006 IGT Maremma Toscana Sangovese and I have to say that although I’m not a lover of red wine, I found this wine to be really fruity with a little spice so it was very easy to drink. It had a very smooth texture for the pallet which was great for me and the rich smelling aroma was not overpowering at all.
So having polished off my pasta, ragu, cheese and wine, I have to say I thought it was absolutely delicious and I couldn’t get enough to the point in that I nearly ate my daughters share too. The pasta was perfect, not bland like some supermarket brands, the ragu was meaty, full of fresh vegetable flavours and didn’t have large lumps of vegetables in which usually puts my daughter off and the creamy cheese brought it all together with its mature flavour.
