We were very fortunate to be asked to review our local Vintage Inn Restaurant, which also happens to be our local pub! The Woodside, in Worsley is a welcoming friendly pub – lovely for catching up with friends, meals with families and makes children very welcome.
James Martin – celebrity chef, has created a selection of pies that are now available in Village Inns, and we were invited to review one of these as part of our meal. However as they sounded so delicious both my husband and I opted for dishes from this new range for our main course! This range of pies are traditional British Favourites – but with that famous James Martin twist. Oh yes we are not talking steak and ale pie, more Beef and Merlot. My husband opted for this and it was delicious!!! – Big chunks of slow cooked beef with shallots and red onion, in a redcurrant jelly and Merlot gravy. When he first cut into the puff pastry the smell was absolutely mouthwatering! The Beef and Merlot pie was served with fresh vegetables and chunky chips and seemed a very popular selection in the restaurant.
I had opted for the Lamb Shank Pie. When we ordered it the manager, Stuart, helpfully pointed out that this was more of a Shepherd’s pie than a traditional pastry topped pie… Lamb is my favourite meat so I was really looking forward to my dish arriving – and it was certainly worth the wait. The dish arrived as expected looking like a delicious golden topped shepherd’s pie, but with the bone of the lamb shank sticking out of the top! The pie was crammed with lamb, which was so soft and tender and was topped with fluffy cheddar mash – it really was one of the loveliest dishes I have tasted!
Every course of our meal was delicious. The portion sizes were plentiful but not over facing, and it was obvious that each dish had received care and attention on how it was presented. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Our drinks were served at the table and we didn’t need to wait too long between courses. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming in the Woodside, and the tables are nicely spread out so there is a lovely relaxed feeling of eating in comfort without being crammed in!
I can’t really say that due to this meal we will come back to the Woodside (as we visit fairly frequently anyway), but I can certainly say that I would recommend this range of pies to anyone; and I will probably opt for the Lamb Shank Shepherd’s Pie next time I visit!
Rating: A mouthwatering 5/5
