Edinburgh Festival Theatre is centrally located at the heart of Edinburgh. There are good bus routes to the theatre or about 10-12 minutes walk from Princes Street or train or tram station. There is also a small car park not far away, you have to pay for it though. We were quite lucky to get an off street parking (free after 18.30 on a single yellow line) a couple of minutes away from the theatre.
It was very easy to pick up our tickets, the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The show started with 8 aliens from planet Voca, who had an emergency and landed on our planet. They don’t speak our language and can only communicate through music, sounds and body language. They soon find a “volunteer” from the audience to download the local language. Now they are able to explain that they need a source of energy to charge their spaceship to be able to get back home. Music is the source of energy for their spaceship.
The show has got a few distinct parts and very well thought through. There is an “evolution” part, where the actors show us the development of music through the ages, then music in the movies with very famous tunes played out through movie scenes (Bond, Rocky, Pink Panther) – the actors did an amazing job singing and acting at the same time.
Then there was an “engaging the audience” part. That was very cleverly done and everybody was on their feet participating. My only advice is if you don’t want to end up on the stage, buy yourself a ticket a bit further away (maybe after row 7).
After the interval was my favorite part. Love songs! The actors chose their partners from the audience and expressed their love. Everybody was in stiches! Don’t want to give much away in case you are going to see it yourself. I only going to mention I loved human poles for pole dancing!
Then there was an international bit with famous songs in different languages from very well known plays and to finish it off there was Queen, Abba, Beatles finale.
All in all I thoroughly recommend to go and see the show! It is a lot of fun, singing and laughing! No matter what your music taste is there is something for everyone from classical music, classical acts like Broadway shows, the likes of Michael Jackson and Madonna to modern singers like Lady Gaga and clubbing music. The singers are so creative, they barely need any music, they are able to produce anything from acappella to an orchestra themselves. Not forgetting to involve the audience and have a great time!
The aliens did manage to charge their spaceship and it was sad to realize that the show was over. I will definitely look out for Voca People in the future and will try to see them again!
