This morning (1 August 2018) I took my two daughters, aged 5 and 18 months, to The Lowry Theatre in Salford to watch What The Ladybird Heard. This play is based on the ever popular Julia Donaldson book of the same name. The story is a favourite in our house so my girls were very excited to see the live action show.
When we entered the theatre we could see the bright and colourful set on stage, which led to lots of questions about what we thought was going to happen and built up the excitement further. The show began and we were introduced to the four actors playing, Lily, the Farmer, Hefty Hugh and Raymond who also played Lanky Len.
The show was full of songs and lots of audience participation which kept both my daughter’s engaged with the performance. The recommended age range for this performance is 3+ years so I wasn’t sure how my 18 month old would react but she sat entranced from start to finish, for a child who never stays still this was a big deal! My 5 year old absolutely loved it and spent most of time giggling away at the on stage antics, she found Raymond hilarious.
The play follows the original story but adds in new, very catchy, songs which extended the story. We all enjoyed the song with the animal noises but my eldest daughters favourite song was the one Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len sing when coming up with their cunning plan. At only 55 mins long the performance is the perfect length to keep a young audience captivated and with the audience participation elements no one lost interest.
This was a funny, engaging family show that I’m sure all young children will enjoy whether they know the story or not. My daughter announced it was “The best show of my life” when it finished and I don’t think you can get higher praise than that! It’s showing at The Lowry most days until the 26th August so lots of opportunities to catch this wonderful play during the summer holidays.
Tickets cost £16 (booking fees may apply).
