In What the Ladybird Heard, Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len were sent to prison for trying to steal the fine prize cow from the farm. In What the Ladybird Heard Next, Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len were released from prison and return to the farm to steal the Fat Red Hen to make money from her eggs, but once again are thwarted by the ladybird and the farm animals. In What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday, the two thieves have become much more ambitious and want to steal the Queen’s crown.
In this third adventure, Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len have given up on the farm and have gone to London. To pull off the biggest heist of their career (stealing the Queen’s crown while she sleeps), first they have to steal Monkey Joe from the zoo. But little do they know, the little spotty ladybird that foiled their previous attempts is also on holiday in London and overhears their cunning plans. So once again, with the help of the zoo animals and the Queen’s corgi’s, she devises a plan so they don’t get away with it.
Overall, we just loved this book! As the twins (age 4) loved the previous 2 books in this series (they call them their poo books, as someone is always stepping in poo), we couldn’t wait for this book to arrive. When they got home from school and saw it, they immediately took and started looking through it. This led to me reading it to them 4 times BEFORE bedtime and once at bedtime. So, I think it’s safe to say they love it.
As with the previous 2 books, this is written in fun, humorous verse. Instead of the well-loved cow, hen, goose, duck, horse, hog, sheep, dog, cats and a farmer we have a crocodile, tiger, lion, monkeys, elephant, camel, hyena, hummingbird and the Queen’s corgi’s.
This is another fabulous story in this wonderful series by Julia Donaldson and once again has been beautifully illustrated by the very talented Lydia Monks. With its bright colours, rhyming story and a glittery ladybird on every page kids will love it (so will the adults, I know I did). Although this time the book doesn’t feature any poo, the boys haven’t noticed, they just enjoyed the story!
